What Did the Critics Think of Dear Evan Hansen

Now playing at the Noel Coward Theatre

Broadway's multi-award winning smash hit, Dear Evan Hansen, officially opened it's West End production at the Noel Coward Theatre on the 19th of November. What did the critics think of this latest import? Find out in our review round-up!

The Independent were full of praise for Dear Evan Hansen and said that it was "A superb, unmissable musical". They continued their glowing review with praise for Benj Pasek and Justin Paul's "wonderful score",  as well as praise for newcomer Sam Tutty (who stars as our titular Evan), "Tutty is more than equal to the part's extraordinary demands...he also radiates the hapless misfit propelled into a situation that is at once horribly comic and tragic."

The Guardian was also full of praise for the production, saying, "This musical arrives from the US laden with honours... and you can see why. It captures the agonies of youth, allows the songs to grow out of the action, and boasts a great role, here memorably by Sam Tutty, for its lead actor."

The Stage said that Dear Evan Hansen was "powerful, moving and superbly performed." LondonTheatre.co.uk said that the production was "stunningly slick and sleek" before continuing with, "Benj Pasek and Justin Paul's beautiful score... has integrity and depth that matches the story they have to tell." They finished their review by saying that Dear Evan Hansen's "impact will resonate, hopefully far beyond the theatre's walls."

What is Dear Evan Hansen about?

The Evan of our story is a high school misfit who is desperate for any form of recognition from his peers. When a traumatic event rocks the community Evan is thrust into its centre, finally getting what he's always wanted: a chance to fit in.

Smart, contemporary and timely, DEAR EVAN HANSEN is a touching and socially conscious exploration of the tumult of adolescence, and what just what we're willing to sacrifice to find our own place in the overwhelming noise of the modern world.
