Gillian Anderson and Billy Crudup set to battle

Kitty, March 19th, 2026

The duo will play the iconic married couple in a new staging of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Gillian Anderson and Billy Crudup will square up in this major new revival of Edward Albee's landmark play, announced today. Directed by Marianne Elliot and staged in the round at @Sohoplace from this autumn, audiences will be up close and personal for this legendary depiction of a marriage in freefall.

One of the most revered works in the modern theatrical canon, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was immortalised both on stage and screen by Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor as George and Martha back in the 60's and remains as stark today in its portrayal of a dysfunctional relationship.

Discussing the new project, Elliot says: "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a play of astonishing emotional precisionbrutal, witty, and deeply human. What excites me most is the opportunity to explore the volatility and tenderness at its core with two actors as fearless and intelligent as Gillian Anderson and Billy Crudup. Albee writes with such fervency about love, illusion, and survival, and I'm so excited to dive into that world with them and rediscover just how alive and bold this play is"

What is the story?

After a party at the university where each of them works, middle-aged George and Martha arrive home with a younger couple, Nick and Honey, in tow. Invited by Martha and to the chagrin of George, the two soon find themselves witnesses to the older couple's increasingly worrying relationship dynamic. Over three acts, Nick and Honey go from horrified observers to finding themselves in the middle of a war of words, becoming players in a full-blown marital breakdown, with explosive consequences.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf is produced by Sonia Freedman Productions and will play from September 21st @sohoplace. Sign up for updates over at the show page, and we'll let you know when tickets are on sale!
