David Thaxton Is The New Phantom
The Olivier award-winner will don the mask from 10 December!
Olivier award winner, David Thaxton is set to take over as the new Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's long-running hit, The Phantom of the Opera! The star will don the mask from December 10, replacing current star Tim Howar.
Howar will return to the role on May 13, 2019, after playing some already scheduled gigs with his band Mike and the Mechanics.
Thaxton garnered the Best Actor in a Musical Oliver for his performance in Passion at the Donmar Warehouse. Thaxton is no stranger to performing in such a large musical with his other credits including playing Javert and Enjolras in Les Miserables, Raoul in Love Never Dies, and Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar.
What is The Phantom of the Opera about?
Hidden in tunnels deep below the Paris Opera, there lies a mysterious deformed musical genius who stalks the halls and terrorises the company. Grotesquely deformed, his face half covered by his famous mask, his only happiness comes from his obsessive night time tutoring of the beautiful, orphaned chorus girl Christine Daae. Unseen, he teaches the young soprano to sing 'The Music of the Night.' Under the tutelage of her invisible 'Angel of Music', Christine blossoms, and steps out of the chorus and into the spotlight.
When Christine becomes engaged to another man, the Phantom is driven mad with jealousy and will stop at nothing to possess her, even murder. And so begins a tantalizing tale of forbidden love and supernatural adventure that will keep you in its clutches long after the last bar.
The Phantom of the Opera is currently playing at Her Majesty's Theatre.
