Fabulous Facts About Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Any dream will do… but we’re dreaming of trivia!
Joe McElderry as Pharaoh, anyone? Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat continues to dazzle audiences across the UK. We've stitched together 10 little-known facts about this rainbow-coated musical that'll have you singing in technicolor in no time.
This epic biblical tale follows Joseph, one of Jacob's twelve sons, who is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers after receiving a coat of many colors. In Egypt, he gains favor with Potiphar but ends up in jail after refusing Potiphar's wife. There, he discovers his gift for interpreting dreams, which brings him before Pharaoh and sets him on a miraculous rise to power.
The Coat Has 29 Colours (At Least!)
Joseph's coat isn't just "red and yellow and green and brown..." The lyrics list 29 different colours, though some stage productions have added even more for dramatic effect. Some of the tones include red, yellow, green, brown, scarlet, black, ochre, peach, ruby, olive... and breathe.
It Was Originally Written for a School Assembly
No big Broadway lights in mind when this one was made! The first version of Joseph was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice for a school choir at Colet Court School. It was a quick 15-minute project to show off the kids' talents. Not bad for a musical that ended up taking over the world!
Donny Osmond Released a Whole Joseph Album
While many stars have donned the dreamcoat, Donny Osmond went the extra mile and recorded a full-length concept album after his stage run giving fans a permanent way to relive his glittery greatness at home, and in the car, shower, or karaoke booth.
It's One of the Few Shows That's Entirely Sung-Through
No dialogue here. Every line is sung, which means the cast has to stay in tune even when explaining plot points like sibling betrayal, slavery, famine, and dream interpretation. It's basically one big fabulous opera.
It Contains a Ridiculous Number of Musical Styles
Reggae? Check. Elvis-style rock n' roll? Check. Country-western hoedown? Also check. The musical is basically a jukebox of musical genres, with each brother's story getting its own twist. It's like a musical theatre buffet.
A Narrator Runs the Show
The real star is often the Narrator, who's onstage almost constantly. With fast-paced lyrics and endless costume changes, they're the unsung (well, actually, very sung) hero of the show. Plus, the role is gender-neutral and has been played by both men and women!
There's a World Record for Most People Wearing Dreamcoats
In 2010, a world record was set in Liverpool for the most people wearing technicolor coats in one place over 2,000 participants showed up, dressed to impress, rainbow-style. That's some serious coat commitment.
