A Monster Calls staggers the critics
Effusive praise for Sally Cookson's new production
Based on Patrick Ness' popular children's novel, Sally Cookson's stage adaptation has proved a resounding hit with the critics, with a raft of four-and five-star reviews cementing The Old Vic show as a highlight of the summer.
With many reviews beseeching potential audiences to bring the tissues, it looks as if the impact of Ness' tale has translated to the theatre, as described by The Times as ""heartbreaking, spectacular, harsh, happy. It leaves you, as my 13-year-old pointed out, ""about as unbored as you could ever be in a theatre"".""
Lead Matthew Tennyson delivers a powerhouse performance with The Independent praising it as ""extraordinarily moving. You completely forget that you are watching an adult actor, so brilliantly does he capture the sensitivity of a lost and lonely teenager"" and The Telegraph predicting big things ""Tennyson's performance as Conor is immensely affecting... a descendant of the poet, [he] remains so fresh-faced he looks like a newcomer, but he's 30. High time he tackled that monster role, Hamlet?""
Looks like the West End has another winner!
A Monster Calls is at The Old Vic until August 25th
