Review: Summer and Smoke Is Truly Mesmerising

Now playing at the Duke of York's Theatre
Continuing their domination of the West End the Almeida's production of Summer and Smoke is the latest production to get the critics all excited. But what did our Abigail think?
"A smoky haze fills the Duke of York's theatre as a purplish light rises upon a semicircle of pianos. With an actor on each, this production begins with a burst of music, grabbing every eye and ear of the audience away from their overpriced popcorn to the figures emerging from the walls. Patsy Ferran takes centre stage as Alma, a pristinely chaste vicar's daughter who cuts a lonely figure amongst the mist, signalling the theme for one of the best plays I've ever seen." What is Summer and Smoke about?
Set in Glorious Hill, Mississippi, Summer and Smoke centres around a highly-strung, unmarried minister's daughter, Alma Winemiller (Ferran), and the tug-and-push will-they-won't they near romance with John Buchanan, Jr. (Needham), a fun-loving and unruly doctor who grew up next to her. Whilst he is in pursuit of her romantically, she rebuffs him, wanting spiritual fulfilment instead. However, as the years pass she realises that he was the one for her all along; but does he still feel the same way about her?
Summer and Smoke is currently playing at the Duke Of York's Theatre through to January 19.
