A Doll's House

A Doll's House at Almeida Theatre

Why see A Doll's House?

Money, Sex, Power

Following her Olivier Award-winning performance in The Years, Romola Garai again takes to the Almeida stage, this time to play the original tragic heroine, Nora a seemingly perfect wife and mother whose world begins to crack as she confronts the cost of keeping up appearances.

In 1879, 19th-century audiences were left questioning the sanctity of marriage and a woman's place amongst the patriarchy. Now, Henrik Ibsen's realism drama which modern critics and fans consider far beyond its years will see a new version by Critics' Circle Award winner Anya Reiss (Becoming Elizabeth, The Seagull), with direction by Joe Hill-Gibbins (The Tragedy of King Richard the Second, Ghosts), as part of the Almeida's 2026 Season!

What's The Story?

Nora Helmer spends her days in exquisite comfort as the wife of the wealthy Torvald. Mother to his three children, Nora flits around their grand house like a prized toy, treated with gifts and fine food. However, when her financial dependency becomes increasingly more apparent, Nora's opinions on the status quo shift, throwing her marriage and family into disarray.
