American Psycho is well on its way to becoming one of those cult favorites.
The murderously good musical returns as part of the Almeida's 2025/26 season! Marking the first production at the iconic venue for Artistic Director Rupert Goold back in 2013, it's only fitting that it receives a much-anticipated revival in Goold's final season. Firmly achieving cult classic status in the decade or so since it premiered, this synthpop confection is based on Brett Easton Ellis' celebrated novel and follows an '80s finance bro as he hacks and slashes his way around New York in a surrealistic satire that takes aim at corporate greed and its many acolytes.
American Psycho's transformation into an ironic musical spectacular was the idea of the playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. A strange concept for a musical - a yuppie whose life is built on shallow consumerism and violent, diabolical acts, but American Psycho is a slick, funny, and clever show that illustrates our fascination with capitalism and how it can devalue the few real things in life. Originally starring Matt Smith, casting for this run is yet to be announced.
On the outside, Patrick Bateman looks like he has it all; money, designer clothes, a great job and a beautiful girlfriend. But the handsome young Wall Street yuppie feels numb to everything, with emotion a language he can't understand.
As such, he feels no remorse when he indulges in his secret side hustle - murdering those who stray into his path in a variety of gruesome ways. But as his killing spree gains quite the body count, his grip on reality begins to falter, especially as he keeps getting away with it.
Mesmerizing, mysterious, interesting
Award winning composer Duncan Sheik delivers a clever mix of classic 80's tunes and original music to narrate the homicidal tale. Everything from the set and costumes to the lighting and sound was stylized, colorful, synthesized, and robotic. Like one gi
