The Mousetrap

The Mousetrap at Churchill Theatre

Why see The Mousetrap?

No Spoilers!

Six decades have done nothing to dull The Mousetrap, the story of an odd assortment of guests snowed in at Monkswell Manor, whilst a murderer is at large and en route. But could they already be here? When bodies start showing up, it's up to the stranded troupe to solve the mystery before they become a part of it. The Mousetrap is once again asking cities all across the UK "whodunnit?" solve the case as it heads on tour!

Shh!

In 1952, Agatha Christie's sprawling and intricate new mystery, The Mousetrap (based on her radio play, Three Blind Mice), opened in the West End on a very strict condition: no audience or press member was ever to give away the plot of the show.

Christie herself was not altogether positive as to the play's run, giving it eight months "at most," so perhaps her edict seemed fair at the time. But it is a testament to theatre audiences that The Mousetrap has endured at St. Martin's Theatre, continually running for over 70 years. Now it's on its way to you as long as you keep the ending a secret!

Did You Know?

Wonder why you haven't seen the film? The secrecy around the plot wasn't the only condition laid down by Dame Agatha. A film adaptation is only allowed six months after the West End production closes, and given that it has been going strong for over 60 years without any sign of ending, that doesn't look all that likely any time soon!

Fun throwback

In an era where almost everything in the West End is a show-stopping musical with set changes, costume changes, music, this is a marvelous throwback - one set, no costume changes, old theater, play set in 1952 or so - and it's great. Yes, the plot has some holes and convenient coincidences, and yes, some of the acting can be a little hammy (although that is how the play was written), but it's also a fun mystery and well played out. I very much enjoyed it. If you're looking for something more traditional, kind of like a game of "Clue" more than, say, the Lion King (which is great in its own right) then this is the play you should go see. ... Read more

Excellent

Visiting London for the weekend with my wife and so happy that we decided to see this play. Good production all round and enough red herrings to keep you guessing. My favourite character was Mr Paravicini, a standout performance by Stephen Matthews. ... Read more
