Sheridan Smith returns to the stage in Alan Ayckbourn's 1985 play
Sheridan Smith makes a triumphant stage return in a revival of Alan Ayckbourn's 1985 play Woman in Mind, opening in the West End at the Duke of York's Theatre this December, before taking to the road to play in Sunderland and Glasgow in spring 2026. A dark comedy that follows housewife Susan after her reality is split in two after a bump on the head, Woman in Mind is a heartfelt and humourous examination of family and identity, with a psychological twist, with Smith at the helm of an ensemble cast who play the families of her dual realities. Direction comes from Michael Longhurst, with set and costume design by Soutra Gilmour.
Last seen on stage in 2023's revival of Shirley Valentine, and currently starring in ITV's I Fought The Law, BAFTA and Olivier winner, and Emmy Nominee, Sheridan Smith is one of the finest UK actors working today. From comedy to drama, her presence alone guarantees a fascinating and unforgettable watch.
After bumping her head in the garden, housewife Susan wakes to discover she can now see two different lives. One real, where her husband and son largely ignore her, and one 'imaginary', where she is doted on by her family. But with the lines between the two beginning to blur, she doesn't have long to choose where she belongs.
is directed by Michael Longhurst, with set and costume design by Soutra Gilmour, lighting design by Lee Curran, sound design by Paul Arditti and casting by Jim Carnahan CSA and Liz Fraser CSA.
