Telling the story of one of America's most infamous miscarriages of justice, The Scottsboro Boys is a brave and gripping look at the enduring racial tensions and prejudice that became a turning point for the Civil Rights movement, dividing and shocking the nation. Following a wildly successful run at the Young Vic, John Kander and Fred Ebb's (Cabaret and Chicago) exhilarating and provocative musical transfers for a strictly limited run at the Garrick, helmed by Tony winning director Susan Stroman.
Whilst riding the box cars in Alabama in search of a new life, the 9 black teenagers that were to become the Scottsboro boys are wrongly accused of rape by two white women, leading to their arrest. The musical explores the years of legal wrangles that exposed the corruption and inherent racism that purveyed in the South in the 1930s.
The oldest 20 the youngest 12, each are unjustly tried numerous times, with sentences ranging from 20 years to the death penalty. The pantomime of the justice system takes over 20 years to unravel, but not before seeing thousands march on Washington to try and sway the fate and secure the right to a fair trial for all men and women.
A powerful story that deserves the relevance afforded it by this daring production; The Scottsboro Boys proves that musical theatre still has the ability to be a relevant voice in today?s world.
Relevant, effective, inspiring
It's well executed, bitingly satirical and simultaneously simple in its anti-racism message and definitely relevant in a time where racism in America is still a sore issue. If you like your musicals with bite, this is for you.
