Bird Grove
The dilemma of Mary Ann Evans, a.k.a. George Eliot
The dilemma of Mary Ann Evans, a.k.a. George Eliot
Olivier and Critic's Circle-award winning playwright Alexi Kaye Campbell (The Pride, Woman in Gold) brings his new work Bird Grove to the Hampstead Theatre for its world premiere! Directed by Olivier nominee Anna Ledwich (Four Minutes Twelve Seconds; Dry Powder), the play is a thematically rich portrait of how family ties can collide with the longing to forge one's own creative path, told through the story of Mary Ann Evans a.k.a. George Eliot, one of the country's greatest ever novelists.
At Bird Grove House, Mary Ann Evans faces a future that seems to be mapped out for her; her father has moved her there specifically to find a husband, now that she's of age. But Mary Ann's growing intelligence and forward-thinking ideals are beginning to take her mind far beyond her father's comfort zone, leaving her torn between her devotion to family and the need to claim her own creative life.
