Stevie at Hampstead Theatre

Why see Stevie?

DIRECT FROM THE CHICHESTER FESTIVAL THEATRE

Olivier-winning actress Zoe Wanamaker reprises her role from the award-winning Chichester Festival Theatre production of Stevie, a biopic about poet artist Stevie Smith. Hugh Whitemore's award-winning play will be revived in 2015 at the Hampstead Theatre with Wanamaker returning there for the first time in 20 years since starring in Terry Johnson's production of Dead Funny.

More recently, Wanamaker has enjoyed accolades in productions such as Passion Play at the Duke Of Yorks Theatre in 2013 and The Cherry Orchard at the National Theatre in 2011.

WHAT IS STEVIE ABOUT?

Wanamaker takes on the biographical role of Stevie Smith, taking a look at both her work as a poet and the private woman behind the prose. The play tells the story of a humble publishing company's secretary who spends her evenings with her beloved aunt in a world of Battenberg cake and gossip while behind the scenes she succeeds in writing piercing poetry and prose that will one day bring her fame and accolades.

Bravo - British theatre at its Best

You could take grand mother and grand child to this as all generations could identify with the compelling central character of the peculiarly English poet Stevie Smith. Loving her work I had been sceptical as to how the play would incorporate her biography and her poems and was delighted by the effortless ease with which Zoe Wanemaker moved between the two generating her own sly rhythms with a ferocious pleasure. I was pleased with my comfortable seats and leg room in the intimate almost in the round configuration for this production. Across the aisle was Michael Frayn who looked equally engaged and moved by the wonderful performances of a succinctly written play. For me, this is one of the evenings when all elements are in perfect unison - set, text, acting - and the thought, work and attention to detail all come together to create an evening that makes you laugh, cry and think. What more can you ask for? Bravo and thank you to all involved. ... Read more
