A Story Death Will Never Forget...
Markus Zusak's 2005 bestseller is coming to London's Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in a new musical adaptation, with a book by bestselling authors Jodi Picoult (My Sister's Keeper) and Timothy Allen McDonald. With direction by Tom Jackson Greaves and music and lyrics by Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson, this is the courageous tale of little Liesel Meminger like you've never seen it before!
What's The Story?
Set in Nazi Germany during the Second World War, The Book Thief follows Liesel Meminger, a young girl who discovers the power of words after stealing her first book at her brother's funeral. Taken in by foster parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann, Liesel finds friendship and the comfort she seeks through reading.
But there's a twist to this tale: our narrator is Death itself. Weary from carrying away countless souls, Death is searching for a story that might restore its faith in humanity. Through Liesel's eyes, we witness the devastating realities of a war-torn world, the quiet bravery of ordinary people and the extraordinary power that language has in healing the wounds of humanity.
