Les Liaisons Dangereuses

Les Liaisons Dangereuses at National Theatre, Lyttelton

Why see Les Liaisons Dangereuses?

A Thrilling Game Of Love, Lies and Social Warfare.

Two louche French aristocrats play a salacious game of manipulation, seduction and humiliation in the name of jealousy and revenge in this revival of Christopher Hampton's classic play, after Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1785 novel of the same name, directed by Marianne Elliott (The Curious Case of The Dog In The Night-Time, War Horse).

Starring Lesley Manville, Aidan Turner and Monica Barbaro, this tale of treacherous schemes is a sexy, clever and deliciously cruel piece of theatre that'll stick with you long after the final curtain.

What Is The Story?

More than just a dark comedy of ill manners, Les Liaisons Dangereuses is also a fascinating look at the sheer decadence at the heart of French high society before it was brought crashing down by the Revolution.

First adapted in the 1980's and last seen in London back in 2015 at the Donmar Warehouse, we follow the tale of the Marquis de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont, two ruthless toffs who enjoy causing misery for the hell of it. Their targets, the innocent and married Madame de Tourvel and young Cecile de Volanges, can only hold on whilst their lives and reputations are dictated by these sex-starved sociopaths.
