Why see Hedda Gabler?

The Olivier winning Wilson returns to the London Stage!

Luther's foxy villainous Alice aka Ruth Wilson makes a welcome return to the stage following her Olivier Award-winning star turns in Anna Christie and A Streetcar Named Desire, both at the Donmar Warehouse. Teaming up with renowned Dutch director Ivo Van Hove, Wilson takes on one of modern theatre's most iconic roles as the titular Gabler in this celebrated production that has already won over audiences in New York, starring Mary Louise Parker in 2009.

In this contemporary setting, Henrik Ibsen's drama about cold reality versus the idealisation of the past sees a spirited independant woman constrained by the boredom of a conventional marriage. Determined to liven up her life, she embarks on a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the lives of people around her. However, she steps too far when she encourages the suicide of a former lover, and finds herself at the mercy of possibly scandal. Rather than submit to her blackmailer, she takes her own life, ensuring that even in death, she only ever plays by her own rules.
