Playing Burton

Playing Burton at Old Vic Theatre

Why see Playing Burton?

One For The Cymrys!

One of the brightest acting exports Wales has seen since the days of icon Richard Burton himself, Emmy Award-winning Matthew Rhys returns to his Welsh roots in Mark Jenkins's acclaimed one-man play Playing Burton at London's The Old Vic.

About The Show

From the green valleys and rugged coastlines of South Wales to global fame, the play traces Burton's unprecedented rise to fame, his explosive romance with Elizabeth Taylor, and his battle with alcoholism. Poignant, witty, and unflinchingly honest, Playing Burton celebrates a man forever caught between brilliance and self-destruction.

About Matthew Rhys

A graduate of RADA, Matthew Rhys first gained attention in BBC dramas before achieving international acclaim as Philip Jennings in FX's The Americans - a role that earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor and multiple Golden Globe nominations. Rhys has since starred in Brothers & Sisters, The Post, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and HBO's Perry Mason, where he received further Emmy and Critics' Choice nominations.
