Why see Tosca?

Jonathan Kent's Production of Puccini's Tragic Masterpiece Tosca

Marrying romance, tragedy, political intrigue and a breathtaking score, Puccini's operatic masterpiece Tosca is often considered his greatest. While it bears the hallmarks of tragic grand opera (boy meets girl, they fall in love, one or both inevitably dies) the tale is filled with thrilling twists and turns. Jonathan Kent's beloved production is back 11 years after its critically acclaimed debut.

Featuring one of the most infamous villains in opera, Tosca is set amidst the collapse of the Roman republic, a time of war and political instability. Chief of Police Scarpia ruthlessly tortures political enemies, turning his malevolent attention on painter Cavaradossi, whose helped a prisoner escape. When she can bear his cries no longer, Tosca, Cavaradossi's lover, begs Scarpia to let him free. Yet as with all great tragedies, death waits around every corner...
