Romeo and Juliet re-rooted in Wales
Romeo and Juliet re-rooted in Wales
Shakespeare's Globe and Theatr Cymru present a bold new bilingual production of Shakespeare's iconic tragedy Romeo and Juliet, reimagined through the lens of Welsh identity. Directed by Theatr Cymru's Artistic Director Steffan Donnelly, the adaptation blends English and Welsh to uncover new layers in the timeless tale of love and loyalty. Re-rooted in the valleys of a nation grappling with legacy and division, this production speaks to both past and present as two young lovers defy their families' bitter feud.
Two-star-crossed lovers must thwart their two respective warring families if they are to be married and reconcile their loved ones. However, the actions of one rash cousin on Juliet's side spurs Romeo into a hasty and deadly action, leading to his exile. Juliet's family, meanwhile, are unaware of her marriage and have arranged for her to marry the eligible and wealthy Paris; she must take drastic measures to escape this fate.
