Philip Glass' Modern Operatic Parable

Continuing their season-long intrepid explorations of the fascinating Greek myth, the English National Opera presents Orphee, a modern spin on the ancient fable by renowned minimalist composer and frequent ENO collaborator Philip Glass. Australian baritone Nicholas Lester and British soprano Sarah Tynan lead a winning ensemble cast as the titular Orpheus and Eurydice respectively, with 2018 Critic's Circle Award winner Jennifer France makes a stunning ENO debut as Orpheus' secondary love interest the Princess. 

Based on the 1950 French black and white film by literary icon and auteur Jean Cocteau, this Orpheus is a poet and artist who is deeply misunderstood by his contemporaries, and when success comes calling they ridicule him and isolate him. This seclusion allows Orpheus to disassociate with the demands of mortal living, opening up his poetic spirit to both the worlds of the living and the dead. When his beloved wife dies, he traverses the realms in search of her, but is captivated by the presence of an enigmatic Princess, who may just be death in disguise...
