Why see Still Life?
Immersive Production
Step into the Grand Saloon Bar at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane this September, to experience a unique, intimate revival of Noel Coward’s masterpiece, Still Life. This immersive production directed by Tam Williams removes the barrier between actor and spectator, set and seating; audiences will sit down for afternoon tea within the set of a train station tearoom, before the 60-minute play takes place around them. With a five-strong ensemble of Rachel Pickup, Alasdair Craig, Antony Jardine, Elizabeth Elvin, and Emily Panes, its sure to be an unforgettable way to experience the classic.
What Is The Story?
Laura Jesson and Alec Harvey are two ordinary, married strangers, whose accidental meeting in the tearoom at Milford Junction station begins a deep but forbidden romance. After seeing each other a number of times they fall in love, but, bound by the strict expectations of the society of their day and their commitments to their respective families, their meetups are restricted to the surroundings of that tearoom. Still Life, the precursor to the film Brief Encounter, is a heartrending exploration of what happens when the right person comes at the wrong time, and one must choose between happiness or moral obligation.
