In a Forest, Dark and Deep is a gritty psychological thriller about sibling rivalry between a brother and sister bound by intimate and backbiting history. Written and directed by Neil LaBute, author of The Shape of Things, Fat Pig and Some Girl(s), this darkly twisting two-hander delves into uncomfortable emotional territories. In a Forest, Dark and Deep features superb performances by stage and screen star Olivia Williams as Betty and Matthew Fox as Bobby.
With her husband unable to assist, Betty - an academic and college dean - enlists her redneck brother Bobby to help her clear out her cottage in the forest. From the moment he arrives, six-pack of beers in hand, Bobby taunts her about her sexual past, her salary and her chosen career which he deems prissy and undeserved. But Betty, despite her manners, is not the moral beacon she would like others to believe. Lying is easy, and as Bobby lashes out criticisms and judgements, Betty twists away. But the truth will not be packed away.
