Long Day's Journey Into The Night

Why see Long Day's Journey Into The Night?

The past is present isn't it? And the future too?

Powerhouse duo Jeremy Irons and Lesley Manville return to the London stage this winter in Eugene O'Neil's Pulitzer Prize winning magnum opus. The story of a mercurial family in crisis told over the course of one day, the production comes courtesy of the Bristol Old Vic where it opened in 2016 to glowing praise. Lesley Manville's star turn in this revival has been recognised with an nomination for a 2018 Olivier Best Actress Award!

WHAT'S THE STORY?

Irons and Manville are James and Mary, the parents of Jamie and Edmund, who've come to visit on an August day in 1912. James is a shabby classical actor who has squandered his talents on one role and Mary is his devoted morphine addicted wife. When the progeny arrives each bringing his own views on love and resentment, it becomes a difficult and explosive day for all involved.

A haunting work that captures the collective dysfunction of the volatile Tyrone family, it is considered one of the 20th century's most astounding plays. Written for his wife and published posthumously in 1956, its foundations lie in O'Neil's own upbringing at his Connecticut summer house.

Reviews

Our review

Engrossing, haunting, world-class

This is an excellent production from an exceptional cast and creative team helmed by director Richard Eyes. I would be surprised to not see it encounter several prominent awards - or nominations at the very least - during its run here on the West End.
