Why see The Mentalists?

RICHARD BEAN REVIVES HIS 2002 SUCCESS

Stephen Merchant and Steffan Rhodri star in this revival of Richard Bean's darkly comic 2002 two-hander, as two men holed up in a faceless hotel with a camera. One is dead set on righting the wrongs of the world according to utopian idealism; the other is happily content in his fantastical little world where he reigns supreme as a hairdressing "god".

This revival marks Stephen Merchant's first "proper" (his words) dramatic role on the stage, and the latest in a string of successful stage productions for author Richard Bean, following One Man, Two Guvnors, Great Britain, and the musical Made in Dagenham.

WHAT IS THE MENTALISTS ABOUT?

Two men enter a faceless hotel room in Finsbury Park. One proceeds to unpack a camera. However, nothing sexual is going on; quite the opposite. One of the men, Ted, is determined on setting the world to rights by creating his own Utopia, and intends to record a manifesto proclaiming it to the world. However, his cameraman Morrie is a benign fantasist and tries without much success to talk Ted down from his growing fury. But what is holding these two men together? As dark and tragic truths come to light, we see why this odd couple engage in a relationship of utter, mutual dependancy.
