Chekhov's play Three Sisters takes a look the decay of the privileged class in Russia and the search for meaning in the modern world. It describes the lives and aspirations of the Prozorov family, the three sisters (Olga, Masha, and Irina) and their brother Andrei. This family are dissatisfied and frustrated with their present existence, having grown up in cultured and urban Moscow; they have for the past 11 years been forced to live in a provincial town due to straitened circumstances.

Performed in tandem with Uncle Vanya, using the same sets and cast, director Andrei Konchalovsky draws on the striking similarities between Chekhov's two most celebrated plays.

The two plays have previously performed at Moccobeta State Academic Theatre in Moscow; one of the oldest theatres in Russia, having been founded in 1923.
