SIMPLY UNCONVINCING
Great set poor direction wooden acting dire miscasting of Lily Allen who simply without wishing to be cruel is not up to it ! Very surprised if this lasts till the end and f the run …hugely disappointing.

THE PILLOWMAN - A LUMPY NIGHT OUT OUT
The darkly written/played humour saves this play for me due to its need for rethinking/edit as to its purpose & point of focus. Free speech a conduit for the need to shape the understanding of ourselves to the world. Without suffering there is no art nor meaningful freedom of choice. Too many obvious and self referential trappings allowed to clutter the striving for truly reflective querying of ‘who are we?’ in the face of banal evil forces set against us from birth to our final execution? Good that the piece provokes scrutiny but disappointment it wasn’t coherently delivered on stage. Pemberton & Kaye are to be thanked for entertaining us in their giving good accounts to their characters in their performances. Allen simply isn’t ready for this level of content. Too flat in delivery & of ability to inhabit this character. That’s tough and I’m sorry. 3 stars would be just too much I’m afraid but 2 isn’t bad from me. Still a good evening out and worthy of being put on - so, thanks.
