Come From Away Comes To Cinemas

The Olivier award winner will be filmed for potential September release in cinemas!

Come From Away is the next musical to receive the film treatment. The musical, which debuted on the West End in 2019, will be filmed this May before a potential September release in cinemas.

2021 marks the twentieth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the event that Come From Away is based around. The musical, which Irene Sankoff and David Hein created, tells the true story of a small town in Newfoundland, Canada, that welcomed over 6,000 people who were left stranded after the closure of the United States' Airspace in the wake of the dreadful attacks.

The musical is scheduled to be filmed in May at Come From Away's Broadway home, the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater. Around 222 people are expected to participate in the making of the film. However, the exact cast is yet to be announced.

The musical's director, Christopher Ashley, will return to direct the filmed production with Alchemy Production Group to provide the stage production and RadicalMedia (who filmed Hamilton) will film the production.

Come From Away made its West End debut at the Phoenix Theatre in January 2019, winning four Olivier Awards, including the award for Best New Musical.

What is Come From Away About?

Based on a true story, Come From Away follows the events of September 11th, 2001, when, far away from New York, 38 transatlantic flights are grounded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland. With the US airspace closed, over 6000 people emerge from the planes into a surreal scene, and despite almost doubling the town's population, are welcomed with open hearts, minds and arms.

Although the horrors of that day are all too familiar, this is a story of hope told from the perspective of a handful of passengers and Gander residents, who wholeheartedly welcomed the stranded travellers into their homes - and into their lives. Among the characters is American Airlines' first female pilot, a gay couple both called Kevin and an Egyptian chef, who fears a frosty reception from the community - only to be proved wrong entirely. Weaving together all of their storylines, the show creates an affirming portrait of human connection in the most trying of circumstances.
