The Lady from the Sea

The Lady from the Sea at Bridge Theatre

Why see The Lady from the Sea?

Alicia Vikander and Andrew Lincoln Star

Oscar Award winner Alicia Vikander makes her stage debut alongside The Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln in a bold new version of Henrik Ibsen's classic, directed by Simon Stone (Yerma, Phaedra) in his Bridge debut! A transitional work that bridges Ibsen's realist phase (A Doll's House, Ghosts) and his later, more symbolic plays (The Master Builder, When We Dead Awaken), The Lady From The Sea centres on characters haunted by the past, but for this show, the future looks bright as it swims to the Bridge Theatre for a strictly limited nine-week run!

What's The Story?

Inspired in part by Ibsen's own coastal upbringing in the port town of Skien and his fascination with the sea, the play is set against the backdrop of a remote coastal town and follows Ellida (Vikander), a woman grappling with the quiet suffocation of domestic life and the reappearance of a past love that threatens to upend everything. Torn between duty and desire, Ellida must confront the choices that define her - and the ones she never made.

Lyrical, Quietly Piercing, and Beautifully Poised

The Lady from the Sea at the Bridge Theatre is a gentle slow-burn that sneaks up on you. The production leans into atmosphere/sea/dream hues, murmuring soundscapes, and clean, unfussy staging that keeps the focus on the people. It feels graceful rather than flashy, and the pull of the ocean is there in every beat. What really lands is the play’s heart: freedom versus duty, the ache of what-ifs, and the courage it takes to choose. It’s measured, occasionally unhurried, but the payoff is tender and clear. Thoughtful, quietly moving theatre. ... Read more
