Passion Play

Passion Play at Duke of Yorks Theatre

Why see Passion Play?

Wanamaker shines in Nichols classic

Bristol-born playwright Peter Nichols was at the height of his powers when he wrote Passion Play in 1981, and this already great work is given the care and attention it deserves in this production from internationally acclaimed director David Leveaux. Starring Zoe Wannamaker (Harry Potter, My Family), this play uses wonderfully inventive devices to tell the story of a once happy marriage which is destroyed by adultery.

Wanamaker and Owen Teale (Game of Thrones) play the ostensibly happily married Eleanor and James. Meanwhile two identically dressed alter egos reveal to the audience their interior emotions. This facet is exploited to full effect with sympathetic, brilliantly effective performances from the full cast, and Leveaux's direction combined with Hildegard Bechtler's subtle set design truly completes the characters' three full dimensions. A treat for any audience, this modern classic is done full justice by a cast and crew bursting with talent.

What is Passion Play about?

Eleanor and James are happily married, it would seem. However each have an alter ego, Nell and Jim respectively, who both arbor undisclosed emotions, in the case of Jim, spend stolen hours sleeping with the sultry and youthful Kate. The affair plays out, James seeking to maintain his innocence while Jim sneaks off into Kate's arms.

With the marriage balance on a knife-edge, something will inevitably give. The thoughts and actions of the alter egos are at risk of entering into the public domain, revealing lies and illicit desires.
