Shirley Valentine

Why see Shirley Valentine?

Brand new production

BAFTA and double Olivier award winner Sheridan Smith makes a triumphant return to the West End in this engaging new revival of Willy Russell's multi-award-winning one-woman play, directed by Matthew Dunster. An uplifting and heartwarming piece, we follow the titular Shirley as she yearns to escape the boredom and depersonalization of housewifery and motherhood, dreaming of jetting off to Greece and never coming back. Or as we call it here at London Theatreland - Doing a Mamma Mia.

The 1989 Olivier award winner for Best New Comedy and Best Actress for star Pauline Collins, Shirley Valentine's central themes of escapism and discovering your inner confidence have made it one of Russell's most beloved works. Don't miss Sheridan as she steps into Shirley's shoes in what is sure to be another powerhouse performance from the Funny Girl and Four Lives star.

How can she be so good !

We could not believe she could remember all those lines but if you watch this fabulous show you will genuinely believe that Sheridan Smith is talking from her heart - not acting. She is an amazing actress and delivers a superb rendition of Willy Russell’s fantastic script. Do not miss this fab show in the beautiful and intimate Duke of York Theatre as it is a total treat. As for Sheridan Smith - We all know she is a national treasure as one of our best actresses but she excels and in this role and will make you believe this was written with her in mind. Truly Fabulous

Saw the show on opening night with my daughter and we were blown away and captivated at the same time. An intimate and hilariously funny, absolutely brilliant performance from Sheridan Smith. Everyone was on their feet to give her a gloriously enthusiastic applause. We thoroughly enjoyed the show. We had great seats in the centre of row D and felt Sheridan was talking straight to us. She came right to the front of the stage to share her feelings with the audience, as if in confidence. Would highly recommend. Lots of men in the audience too who seemed to enjoy the show according to their cheers. ... Read more
