Widely described as one of the finest contemporary English plays, Tony Award-winner Tom Stoppard's Arcadia will be revived at the Old Vic Theatre in 2026, directed by Carrie Cracknell. Premiering in 1993 at the National Theatre and designated as one of the best science-related plays ever written by the Royal Institution of Great Britain in 2006, this time-hopping mystery sees Stoppard at his very best, using complicated themes of mathematics to plumb the human condition.
On a Derbyshire estate in 1809, a teenager by the name of Thomasina Coverly has an enquiring mind; she seeks knowledge of all kinds, much to the frustration of her tutor Septimus Hodge. In the present day, literary experts Hannah Jarvis and Professor Bernard Nightingale aim to unravel the mysteries of the house and its inhabitants. At once witty, flirtatious, and also full of big Stoppardian ideas, this modern classic captures the wonder of the Romantic era alongside our present day search for answers.
