The American Clock

The American Clock at Old Vic Theatre

Why see The American Clock?

The American Clock turns, fortunes are made and lives are broken

The Great Depression is laid bare in this 'mural for theatre' by Arthur Miller, based upon the oral history 'Hard Times' by Stud Terkel. Beginning with the fortunes of the once prosperous Baum family who lost their wealth in the crash of '29, and told through the eyes of aspiring writer son Lee, Miller unravels a vast and compelling examination of the financial catastrophe and the impact felt across the entire country.

The first of Miller's plays to be revived for The Old Vic's 2018/19 season, preceding the star-studded All My Sons, The American Clock was last seen in the capital in 2012. A rarely performed work by the legendary American playwright, director Rachel Chavkin will be applying her Award winning talents to the piece, undoubtedly finding connections between the America that reeled in the 1930s and the world as we find it today. Epic and detailed, yet full of hope and idealism, set to the roiling jazz soundtrack of the era, don't miss the ticking of The American Clock this coming winter.
