101 Dalmations

101 Dalmations at Open Air Theatre

Why see 101 Dalmations?

the adventure live on stage

Regent's Park Open Air Theatre's 2022 season will finally bring their long-awaited production of the rollicking animal adventure 101 Dalmatians! Based on the classic children's story by English novelist Dodie Smith, this brand new musical features a book by award-winning playwright Zinnie Harris, music by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Douglas Hodge, direction by the theatre's Artistic Director Timothy Sheader, and puppetry by celebrated puppeteer Toby Olie.

What is the story?

The story follows Pongo and Missis, a pair of delightfully spotted dalmatians who live in London with their kind and caring owners the Dearlys. The only thing that makes their idyllic life better is the arrival of their 15 puppies, but their bliss is short-lived thanks to the machinations of their evil neighbour Cruella de Vil, the villain to end all villains. When she steals the pups for their fur, Pongo and Missis take matters into their own paws and em-bark on a quest to rescue them.

Puppets or real-life?

Fantastic. I was engrossed from beginning to end. The sad bit had me crying and it was also full of humour. It's amazing how the puppets come to life so quickly in my imagination. Great acting and singing. Lovely host in the Ambassador bar too. ... Read more

Joyous

A Joyous show, with just a few 'sad' bits to give it variety. Whilst there are no 'killer' songs, many of them are toe-tapping and the repeated use of "Take Me Home" does give the show a good structure. The ensemble are a massive part of what the show so good, both individually good singers (and puppeteers at the same time) and as a blended, emotive, whole. Kym Marsh is suitably funny, humorous and evil as the show demands. ... Read more
