Matthew Lopez presents a new world premiere drama

A world premiere play in two parts is coming to the Young Vic in March 2018, that is set to be the talk of the town. Written by lauded playwright Matthew Lopez whose works include 2011's The Whipping Man and 2015's Reverberation, this touching new drama about New York's LGBT community will be helmed by Stephen Daldry. Set design will be taken over by Olivier Awardee Bob Crowley, who provided the stunning set for The Plantagenets, as well as garnering three more Tony Awards across the Pond in other works.

It was 1983 when the AIDS crisis reared its head in New York's flourishing gay scene, causing worldwide panic and mistrust towards gay men. Now a whole generation has passed after the countless deaths caused by the cruel diseas; Lopez's poignant and tear-jerking drama examines the legacy of gay men today in New York, where reminders of the epidemic are still all-too real. Centred on a young man who finds love unexpectedly, and who also has to see his friend suffer and die from AIDS, this heart-rending work will have you reaching for the tissues.

This will become a classic!

As far as I could see, every person in the theatre gave the cast a standing ovation for their performances in both parts 1 and 2., and deservedly so. The script was funny, sad, incredibly moving and very witty. It integrated literature, history, culture and politics seamlessly and insightfully. It is hard to find words that do justice to this amazing piece of theatre. Catch it if you can although you will be lucky if you can get seats. Despite the lack of press reviews word of mouth seems to have spread. ... Read more

You must see see this play!!!

I think this play is of the most important plays written in this century. It is NOT trying to copy Angels in America but rather is the post-AIDS response from the next generations of gay men that followed who are trying desperately to tell their story but not forgetting the hard fought path that came before them. It is not just TRYING to tell that story, it is doing so in a way that was most unexpected and touched me deeply. It is so well written and clever and will no doubt become a film as well. This is the best new play I have seen in the last 10 years gay or otherwise and a much needed postscript to 35 years of suffering and hatred. This is a play that just must be seen. WOW! ... Read more
