Sister Act Postpones London Return With Whoopi Goldberg No Longer Starring

The hit musical was set to return to London in 2021

The hotly anticipated return of Sister Act has been postponed even further it has been announced. Set to star Whoopi Goldberg in the leading role, the musical has now been rescheduled for 2022, with Goldberg no longer appearing.

Sister Act, which features music by Alan Menken, was originally scheduled to run at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith during the summer of 2020, before being postponed to 2021. However, because of the ongoing confusion over COVID-19 restrictions, and no clear date as to when London's theatres will be allowed to open, the decision has been made that Sister Act will no longer open in 2021, with dates being rescheduled to 19 July to 28 August 2022.

Due to the need to reschedule the production's dates, Whoopi Goldberg who starred in the original films and was set to reprise her highly acclaimed role as Deloris Van Cartier in the stage production has had to pull out and will no longer be performing. However, she is still involved as a producer.

In a statement regarding the news, Goldberg said "Sister Act is near and dear to my heart and I'm disappointed that I will be unable to perform in this production under the circumstances. However, my producing partners and I will continue to work towards mounting a fantastic production, with an amazing new cast and we look forward to presenting it when it can be done safely for everyone onstage, behind the scenes and in the audience. "

Casting for both the London run plans for a UK tour will be announced at a later date.
