Casting Announced For Equus Revival
Ritualistic, psychological, and in parts disturbing…
Neigh - or should we say - yay! A new revival of Peter Shaffer's Tony Award-winning Equus arrives in London this May, with full casting now confirmed. The play first galloped into the Royal National Theatre in 1973 and went on to run for over 1,200 performances on Broadway, with actors like Anthony Hopkins and Richard Burton taking on the role of Dysart.
This revival opens at the Menier Chocolate Factory from 8 May to 27 June - an ideal intimate setting - before transferring to Theatre Royal Bath in July. But be warned - it is anything but your standard night at the theatre.
The Cast
Leading the production is Toby Stephens as psychiatrist Martin Dysart. He is joined by Noah Valentine as Alan Strang, alongside Amanda Abbington, Bella Aubin, Emma Cunniffe, and Colin Mace.
The Story
The play was inspired by Peter Shaffer hearing about a real-life case in which a teenage boy blinded horses. Without knowing the full details, he imagined the psychological "why" and built Equus from that question. As the sessions take place, instead of simply "fixing" Alan, Dysart begins to question his own life, his profession, and what it means to be normal.
