Springwood

A clash of cultures with historic implications
Why see Springwood?
Stanley Tucci's Directorial Debut
Hampstead Heath Theatre hosts Springwood by Olivier and Tony Award-winning playwright Richard Nelson (Goodnight Children Everywhere; Farewell to the Theatre), with direction by the acclaimed, Golden Globe and Emmy-winning actor Stanley Tucci, making his London stage directing debut. Tucci's previous work as a director includes Lend Me a Tenor on Broadway, which received three Tony Award nominations, and his collaboration with Nelson on this pre-war tale promises to be both nuanced and witty.
What Is The Story?
Set in the late 1930s the looming shadow of an impending Second World War, Springwood follows King George VI and Queen Elizabeth as they journey to upstate New York for an unprecedented weekend with President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the First Lady. The diplomatic overtures are to be held over a shared picnic, which turns into a fascinating clash of cultures for both sides to navigate... the special relationship is tested to the full when royal etiquette is forced to contend with beer and hot dogs, with huge potential political implications.
